Did someone steal your identity or use your personal information?
Immediately notify Cove FCU by calling 859-292-9000 or go to our main office to speak with an account specialist.
If you think that your Cove debit card or Mastercard credit card has been compromised, go to our Lost/Stolen Debit/Credit Card page.
After you’ve called or visited our office, continue through the rest of these steps to recover your identity.
STEP 1
CONTACT ONE OF THE THREE CREDIT BUREAUS
(That company must tell the other two.)
1-888-766-0008
Equifax.com/CreditReportAssistance
1-888-397-3742
Experian.com/fraudalert
1-800-680-7289
TransUnion.com/fraud
Request that they place a fraud alert on your file.
You will receive a letter from each credit bureau confirming that this has been done.
Visit annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228 to get a free copy of your credit report.
Review your report and make note of any accounts or transactions you don’t recognize. This will help you report the theft to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and police.
Report the identity theft to the FTC.
You can complete the form online (https://www.identitytheft.gov/Assistant#) or call 1-877-438-4338. You will be walked through the process of creating an identity theft affidavit.
File a report with your local police by going to your local police office with:
- A government-issued ID with a photo.
- Proof of your address (mortgage statement, rental agreement, or utility bill).
- A copy of your FTC Identity Theft Affidavit.
- Any other proof you have of the theft (bills, IRS notices, etc.).
Be sure to ask for a copy of the police report.
Combine your FTC Identity Theft Affidavit and your police report to create your Identity Theft Report.
This proves to businesses that someone stole your identity.
STEP 2
START REPAIRING THE DAMAGE BY CLOSING ANY FRAUDULENT ACCOUNTS OPENED IN YOUR NAME
Now that you have an Identity Theft Report, call the fraud department of each business where an account was opened.
Explain that someone stole your identity.
Ask the business to close the account.
Ask the business to send you a letter confirming that:
- The fraudulent account isn’t yours.
- You aren’t liable for it.
- It was removed from your credit report.
Keep this letter and use it if the account appears on your credit report later on.
Businesses may require you to send them a copy of your Identity Theft Report or complete a special dispute form.
Use this ID theft dispute sample letter for new accounts.

Explain which information on your report came from identity theft.
Ask them to block that information.
